Diverse Network of Individuals Supporting Scotland's Storytelling Culture

Scottish Storytelling Forum

The Scottish Storytelling Forum (SSF) was founded in 1992 to encourage and support the telling and sharing of stories amongst all age groups and all sectors of society, particularly those who, for reasons of poverty or disability, are sometimes excluded from artistic experiences.

In April 2023, the SSF moved to SCIO status officially winding up Scottish Storytelling Forum SC020891 with all assets and funds being transferred to the new Scottish Storytelling Forum SCIO (SC052330).

SISF Community Programme

The SISF Community and Family Programme bookends and runs alongside the main Scottish International Storytelling Festival and is taking place between Monday 16 October – Thursday 30 November.

This year, we will pair local storytellers with schools and community groups across Scotland with a varied and enjoyable programme for all.

Take Part in The Big Scottish Story Ripple

Community groups and schools can take part in The Big Scottish Story Ripple by holding a storytelling event led by a professional storyteller from our Storytelling Directory.

Groups can apply for a subsidy that will cover the cost of their storyteller’s fees. In return, successful applicants must offer a good deed back to their local community on or before St Andrew’s Day – continuing the ripple of kindness.

Stories, song and dance with shared food right in the heart of the community. Bringing communities together, sharing resources and celebrating kindness.

Stone Soup Collective

The Stone Soup Collective was a series of community events facilitated by a storyteller in partnership with a community hub in their local area. A ceilidh of stories, song, and dance with shared food, right in the heart of the community.

As part of the Scottish International Storytelling Festival 2022, we funded 15 community events across Scotland.

Each storyteller received £300 to deliver an event in partnership with a community organisation of their choice around the theme of The Stone Soup story. The events all took place between 14 Oct – 30 Nov 2022.

The Stone Soup is a European folk story in which strangers convince the people of a town to each share a small amount of their food in order to make a larger meal that everyone in the community can enjoy. At the heart of this story is a message of welcoming strangers, integration, kindness and sharing our resources to enable community strength and support.

  • Which story/song/dance would you bring to the Scotland’s diverse pot?
  • Which members of community would you welcome and include?
  • Which ingredients would you bring to a shared meal?
